An early morning storm knocked out power to more than 1,300 utility customers in west Winfield Tuesday and caused what city officials describe as significant transmission and distribution line damage.
According to the City of Winfield, about 50 customers remained without power as of 8 a.m. in an area generally between 61st and 71st roads and from 182nd Road to West 14th Avenue. Officials say those outages could last anywhere from 36 to 72 hours because of widespread infrastructure damage north and south of the affected area.
City utility crews restored power to the majority of customers overnight, but officials say some outages in other parts of town may require repairs by a private electrician before service can be restored. In some cases, damage occurred between the utility pole and the home, meaning customers will need to privately address those repairs before power can be reconnected.
The city says customer service staff will attempt to contact those still affected. Customers can also call 620-221-0404 for updates.
And because of the isolated nature of the storm damage, the city says it will not provide special tree limb pickup. Residents can instead take debris to the City Compost Facility at 320 Broad Street during normal operating hours.
