A 15-year-old Ark City Middle School student was arrested Friday morning after school administration was alerted to a student text message that was threatening in nature.
According to a text alert from USD 470 just after 10 a.m. Friday, the statement pertained to a single individual.
In a separate news release from the Ark City Police Department later in the day, the threat was planned during school hours.
“As with all reported crimes, this incident was taken seriously, and there was an increased officer presence at the Arkansas City Middle school on the morning of Feb. 10, 2023,” the ACPD said. “The 15-year-old suspect in the alleged threat was contacted and arrested without incident for criminal threat and transferred to a secured juvenile facility.”
The ACPD said the case will be sent to the Cowley County Attorney’s office for prosecution.
“Following a thorough investigation, ACPD arrested one ACMS student at the school this morning,” the school district stated. “At this time, we do not believe there is a credible threat to be concerned about. Please know that any threat to the safety of our students and staff is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
“We appreciate those who report these instances so that we can maintain a safe learning environment for our students, staff and visitors. Their safety is our top priority.”
