Winfield sophomore Dane Chattam rushed for 243 yards and three touchdowns Friday night as the Vikings advanced in the Kansas state football playoffs. They were victorious 35-20 at home over Circle.
The game at Richard L. Jantz Stadium got off to a slow start with no scoring in the first quarter. Chattam, though, scored on a three-yard run in the second to jump start a big night running for the Vikings.
Overall Winfield had 368 yards of offense, 341 of that on the ground. Chattam’s second half rushing performance included a touchdown that helped the host Vikings distance themselves from the Thunderbirds.
“Dane got loose,” head coach Monty Lewis said in a postgame interview on 95.9 Bob FM. “Gee whiz he can run.”
Lewis credited great play by the offensive line and the team’s fullback for helping to create a solid rushing attack.
Winfield is on the road next week to play Andover Central.

WELLINGTON – Quarterback Dusty Bannister found wide receiver Grady Norris for four touchdown throws Friday as the Wellington Crusaders cruised to a 61-6 victory over visiting Ulysses.
The undermanned Tigers scored on a pick-six in the first half for their only points of the ballgame.
Otherwise, it was all Wellington, who improved to 7-2 on the season. Bannister had over 390 yards passing and six touchdown tosses. Norris had over 300 yards receiving and the four TDs.
The gaudy numbers from the two were amassed in just one half of football. Backup players were in by the start of the second half.
Bannister and Norris are both seniors.
Wellington, the three seed in the west bracket of the state playoffs, will play host to Kapaun Mt. Carmel next Friday.
