Arkansas City is now a Purple Heart City.
“Mayor Jay Warren made history during the January 16 City Commission meeting by officially declaring Arkansas City the first Purple Heart City in Cowley County,” a news release from the City of Ark City stated Thursday morning.
Members of VFW Post 1254 were present as Warren read the proclamation. The meeting also welcomed Randy Frank, the Department of Kansas American Legion Commander.
“The designation of Arkansas City as a Purple Heart City holds deep meaning,” Frank said. “It reflects the city’s dedication to recognizing and honoring Purple Heart recipients, both living and deceased. Additionally, the city aims to pay tribute to all veterans residing within its boundaries who have bravely served in the military.”
Frank’s son is commemorated through the Sgt. Kevin A. Gilbertson Memorial Bridge in south Ark City.
In addition to the proclamation, City Manager Randy Frazer is coordinating efforts to create signage declaring Ark City a Purple Heart City at the city limits, the news release said.
The initiative includes plans for a recognition celebration to commemorate the occasion once the signs are installed.
