By Shana Adkisson, City of Arkansas City – The Arkansas City Fire/EMS Department and Arkansas City Police Department have joined forces to support a local resident in need.
The departments are holding a fundraiser for Arkansas City native Piper Leigh Hawkinson, who is currently facing serious medical challenges.
They are selling t-shirts designed by Arkansas City Fire/EMS Captain Brandy Rice. The logo reads “Ark City First Responders,” with a pink ribbon symbolizing cancer. The back of the shirt includes a pink ribbon, a U.S. flag, the logos of both departments and the words “United We Stand.”
“Time is running out to order t-shirts supporting Piper,” said Rice. “Orders will be accepted through Monday, September 16, 2024. Payments must be received by noon that day for orders to be processed. Proceeds will go directly to Piper, who has endured a tough year.”
In April, Hawkinson’s cancer returned and spread to her lymph nodes, spleen, liver, and lungs after previously being in remission. Shortly after, she experienced the heartbreaking loss of her husband. Despite these difficulties, Hawkinson remains resilient and has undergone radiation treatments in Arizona. She now requires heart surgery at KU Medical Center before continuing treatment for her lung tumors.
“The Arkansas City Fire/EMS and Police departments are rallying around Piper, recognizing the importance of community support in times of need. By purchasing a t-shirt or donating, you can help Piper with her medical bills and travel expenses as she continues her courageous fight,” Rice said.
