Arkansas City Fire/EMS responded to a structure fire Sunday afternoon in the 300 block of West Jackson Avenue.
Fire crews were called at approximately 1:05 p.m. to a two-story, wood-frame, two-family apartment building after reports of smoke coming from the structure. Upon arrival, firefighters observed dark smoke coming from a first-floor studio apartment.
The sole occupant of the apartment, a female resident, was able to escape the building before firefighters arrived and was not injured.
Firefighters made entry and quickly brought the fire under control. During a search of the second-floor apartment, which sustained smoke damage, crews located and removed the occupant’s pet cat. The animal appeared to be unharmed.
According to fire officials, the fire originated from a lit candle inside the first-floor apartment. A damage estimate was not immediately available.
No injuries were reported.
