The city of Ark City has been chosen to receive $240,000 in federal funding for use in developing a comprehensive Safety Action Plan meant to improve road safety and reduce crashes.
The money is part of $1.1 million awarded to Kansas communities as part of the U.S. Dept. of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program. Gov. Laura Kelly recently announced the communities set to receive the funding.
“This grant represents a significant investment in the safety and well-being of our residents,” said Nick Rizzio, Municipal Project Manager for the City of Arkansas City. “By analyzing accident patterns and addressing the factors contributing to crashes, we are taking proactive steps to create safer streets for everyone—drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike.”
The SS4A grant will fund the creation of a Safety Action Plan, which focuses on:
• Identifying high-risk areas for accidents.
• Analyzing root causes of crashes.
• Developing data-driven strategies to reduce traffic incidents and enhance safety.
The project is supported by a $3,000 local funding match and $57,000 in contributions from the Build Kansas Fund, bringing the total project cost to $300,000.
The Safety Action Plan will incorporate community input, expert analysis, and innovative solutions to address Arkansas City’s unique traffic safety challenges, city officials said.
As progress is made, the public will receive updates on the development of the Safety Action Plan.
