Ark City man, 82, dies following mower accident caused by muddy ground

An elderly Arkansas City man died Tuesday afternoon in an accident involving a riding lawn mower, according to the Cowley County Sheriff’s Dept.

82-year-old George Hawkins Jr. was riding a Brush Hog mower in the 13000 block of 212th Rd. when the injury accident occurred. The mower’s front wheels dug into the mud and overturned it onto Hawkins, pinning him to the ground.

Several good Samaritans stopped, called 911, and were able to get the mower off Hawkins.

Around 3:50 p.m., Winfield Fire and EMS and sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene. Life saving measures were administered by deputies and EMS crews then took over.

An EagleMed air ambulance was requested to launch and land at the scene. Prior to EagleMeds arrival, Winfield EMS transported Hawkins to William Newton Memorial Hospital. Hawkins was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.
