Drivers who get behind the wheel after drinking can expect to see more police on the roads in Arkansas City later this month.
From Aug. 16 through Labor Day, Sept. 1, the Arkansas City Police Department will join law enforcement agencies across Kansas in the “You Drink. You Drive. You Lose.” enforcement campaign, aimed at reducing crashes, injuries and deaths caused by impaired driving.
Preliminary 2024 state data shows 83 people were killed and more than 1,100 injured in Kansas crashes involving an alcohol-impaired driver. Police say even one drink can impair judgment, reasoning and muscle coordination, putting the driver and others at risk.
“Driving after consuming alcohol or any impairing substance is a choice,” Arkansas City Police Chief Jim Holloway said. “This campaign is a reminder to think about how your decisions affect not just you, but your family, friends, coworkers and neighbors. If you drive impaired, you are far more likely to crash — and that crash is far more likely to result in serious injury or death.”
Police urge drivers to plan ahead, designate a sober driver or call a friend or family member if they have been drinking.
“And always wear your seat belt — it’s your best defense against impaired drivers. Every trip. Every time,” Holloway said.
