Arson is suspected in a fire late Sunday that caused significant damage to a vacant home in Winfield.
Around 11 p.m., Winfield Fire EMS was called to a structure fire in the 400 block of W. 14th. They arrived to find heavy smoke and fire coming from a two-story house and garage.
Work then began to extinguish the fire and protect nearby structures. The fire was fully under control just before 1 a.m., according to a written statement from Winfield fire marshal Pete Rowley.
The home was determined to be vacant and had no utility service at the time. Fire personnel were to remain on the scene to continue investigating and monitoring hot spots.
No injuries were reported. A cause remains undetermined though arson is suspected.
A K-9 unit from the Sedgwick County Fire Dept. was called to the scene.
Burden, Udall and Ark City fire personnel assisted at the scene.
