WINFIELD — Winfield firefighters are investigating an early-morning house fire Thursday that officials believe was intentionally set.
Crews were dispatched at 1:39 a.m. to 1214 Stewart St., where they arrived to find heavy fire coming from the structure, according to a news release from Winfield Fire/EMS. The department, led by Interim Chief/Fire Marshal Pete Rowley, confirmed that firefighters were able to knock down the blaze, and no one was found inside the home.
The house was abandoned and without utilities. No injuries were reported.
Responding agencies included Winfield Fire/EMS, the Burden Fire Department, the Udall Fire Department, the Ark City Fire/EMS, the Winfield Police Department, an investigator from the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office with an accelerant-detection K-9, and the City of Winfield Utilities.
Winfield Fire/EMS and Winfield Police are investigating and say the fire is believed to be arson, according to Fire Marshal Rowley. Authorities are asking residents in the area to check security cameras for anything that may assist in the investigation.
