Longtime Atlanta fire chief Darren Grow has been a first responder for a lot of years. He made one of his greatest saves just last Wednesday.

That’s when one-year-old Landry Biddle was found unresponsive in a kiddie pool next door to Grow’s house. The girl, and her father, Ky, had been visiting with Grow when Landry slipped away, with her brother, and fell into the pool.

What ensued was a chaotic stretch of 15 or 20 minutes, that ended with Landry being revived and out of the hospital in under 24 hours.

“Darren Grow I cannot thank you enough for what you did,” Scott Biddle, Landry’s grandfather, posted on Facebook. “You will forever be in our hearts and will be a special person to Landry. Thank you so much for getting Landry back to us.”

Grow spoke with Cowley Post and KSOK Radio about the July 24 incident. You can hear his recounting of events, here:

“I just feel thankful that the little girl lived,” he said, Monday night, by phone from his home in Atlanta, Kan. “I don’t know what I’d do if that little girl hadn’t have lived. The good Lord was looking after all of us.” (Continue story below ads.)

The incident occurred near dark that evening in the 600 block of Locust in Atlanta, about 25 miles northeast of Winfield.

Grow has been Atlanta fire chief, overseeing a volunteer department, since the early 90s. He said he hopes this story will encourage others to volunteer and consider getting their CPR certification.

“I hate to say it, but we live in a selfish society,” Grow said. “People don’t want to volunteer anymore. They think more about themselves, than what they can do for others.”
