Ark City Police Chief Eric Burr recently addressed complaints he’s seen on social media regarding kids and bicycles.
Burr told Bob FM recently he urges parents and guardians to remind their children and teenagers the importance of bicycle safety when riding throughout town.
“If they see a situation that doesn’t seem right or looks dangerous — if some of the kids in our community maybe are not following the rules when it comes to bicycle safety — give us a call through dispatch, so that way we can address those issues,” Burr said.
Burr said posting a complaint randomly on social media isn’t an effective way to take care of any problems in real time.
“We see the posts on Facebook, but we don’t always get a call to the department for us to come out and actually talk to them about bicycle safety and address the issues at hand,” he said. “If we come across a post that, let’s say is on Facebook, we really don’t have the opportunity to educate at the time — it could be hours later, it could be days later before we get a chance to even look at that.
“So I would just really encourage people to call the police department. That’s what we’re here for. We would much rather get that call so that way we can come out and address whatever issues that are arising at that time.”
