A Winfield man was arrested Wednesday night after police were called for a report of a drunk driver on a forklift.

According to a news release from the Winfield Police Department Friday, Winfield Police officers received a report Wednesday at approximately 8:55 p.m. of a possible drunk driver in the area of Country Club Road and CS Smith Road that was driving a forklift.

While officers responded to this area, they received additional information that the person driving the forklift had gone to an address outside of the city limits into Cowley County and began to cause damage to the residence there. Cowley County deputies responded to the call, but due to it being close to the Winfield city limits, asked Winfield police officers to respond there and that they would meet them there.

Winfield police then went to 17987 65th Road and located the forklift and two men arguing in the front yard of the residence. Upon observation several windows of the residence had been broken out and the suspect had an injured and actively bleeding arm.

Winfield EMS was called to the area as a result of the injury on the person’s arm.

During the course of this investigation, it was learned that the forklift came from Schmidt and Sons of Winfield. The suspect, identified as John Carr of rural Winfield, was transported to the William Newton Hospital emergency room for medical treatment.

Winfield officers then went to Schmidt and Sons and discovered evidence of forced entry into the building. It was verified that the forklift in question had come from this business and taken without permission.

Upon conclusion of the joint investigation between the Winfield Police Department and Cowley County Sheriff’s Office, Carr was arrested and charged with burglary, felony theft, and two counts of criminal damage to property.

In the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office activity report, Carr was listed as arrested for DUI and criminal damage to property.

Carr remains in the custody of the Cowley County Jail at the time of this press release.
