The Ark City High School boys basketball team pulled off one of the more improbable victories of the season Tuesday night, defeating Goddard 60-57 in triple overtime in Ark City.
The Bulldogs needed a 3-pointer by Jaxon Jackson at the end of regulation to force overtime with the game tied 35-35. In the first extra session, Ark City got a game-tying basket from Trevin Miller in the closing seconds to force a second overtime.
In double overtime, Ark City again found itself down three in the final seconds before Cruz Retana drilled a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game to a third overtime. The Bulldogs then outscored Goddard 10-7 in the third overtime to secure the win.
Trevin Miller led Ark City with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Jackson added 15 points. The duo combined to make seven 3-pointers.
In the girls game, the Ark City High School girls basketball team fell to Goddard 38-30.
Trailing just 17-14 midway through the second quarter, Goddard used a 12-0 run to open up the game. Ark City continued to battle but ultimately fell by eight.
Junior Gracie Phillips led the Bulldogs with 14 points and eight rebounds, and Ark City out-rebounded Goddard 39-20. However, 31 turnovers proved to be the difference. Goddard’s Audriana Phillips-Blevins led all scorers with 15 points.
Both Ark City teams will face Garden Plain on Thursday at Wichita’s Newman University before returning home Friday to face Newton High School at 6 and 7:30 p.m.
