WINFIELD, Kan. — A motorcyclist was seriously injured Saturday afternoon in a collision on U.S. 77 at Quail Ridge Drive, according to Winfield police.

The crash happened about 1:30 p.m. when a southbound 2025 Kia K4, driven by 41-year-old James Mesker of Wellington, attempted to turn east onto Quail Ridge Drive and failed to yield to a northbound 1987 Honda motorcycle, police said. The motorcycle, driven by 23-year-old Colton Hayes of Beloit, struck the side of the Kia.

Hayes was transported to William Newton Hospital by Winfield Fire/EMS and later flown by helicopter to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. An update on his condition was not available.

A passenger in the Kia, Gary Christopher of Wellington, reported minor injuries.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene. Mesker was cited in Winfield Municipal Court for failing to yield while turning left.
