This order has since been rescinded by KDHE.
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has issued a boil water advisory for the City of Belle Plaine public water supply system in Sumner County.
The advisory took effect Nov. 6 and will remain in place until officials determine the system is no longer at risk of bacterial contamination.
According to KDHE, a loss of power in the pump control system caused a loss of pressure. When water pressure drops, it can result in a loss of chlorine residuals and allow bacterial contamination to occur.
Residents should take the following precautions until further notice:
-
Boil water for one minute before drinking or using it for food preparation, or use bottled water.
-
Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from household automatic icemakers.
-
If tap water appears dirty, flush water lines by letting them run until clear.
-
Disinfect dishes and food-contact surfaces by immersing them for at least one minute in clean tap water mixed with one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon.
-
Bathing water does not generally need to be boiled, but children should be supervised to prevent ingestion. People with cuts or severe rashes may want to consult a doctor.
Only KDHE can rescind the advisory after lab testing confirms the water is safe.
