Bulldogs, Vikings football schedules released; Cowley Cup set for Sept. 1 in Winfield

Football schedules have been released for Ark Valley Chisholm Trail schools.

The Bulldogs and the Vikings, as is tradition, will kickoff their seasons against each other in the Cowley Cup.

Ark City will travel to Winfield on Sept. 1.

Ark City defeated the Vikings last season inside Bulldog Stadium 43-14, however the last time the Bulldogs played in Winfield, Ark City fell.

In 2021, the Bulldogs — fresh off a 4A state title game appearance the prior season –lost 10-7 in a Cowley Cup inside Richard Jantz Stadium that was delayed at halftime due to lightening and finished Monday.

In that game, it was the debut of Monty Lewis as head coach of the Vikings.

For Ark City’s return to Winfield this season, it will be another debut — this time for first-year Bulldogs Head Coach Chet Pobolish, who takes over for Jon Wiemers.

Wiemers accepted an offer in March from Olathe West to be the head coach of the 6A Owls football team.

Winfield finished 2-8 last season with wins against El Dorado and an upset at Wellington in the first round of the playoffs.

The Vikings had several close losses, including defeats of one point (21-20 at Augusta), five points, a touchdown loss against Mulvane and two others by 10.

Ark City had a record of 3-7 a year ago with a first round playoff win at Buhler.

Then Bulldogs senior quarterback Gabe Welch, who is now a Butler County Community College football signee, was injured for the season early in the fourth game of the schedule at Goddard. Then freshman Jordy Pierce took over and was the signal caller the rest of the way and helped lead Ark City’s come-from-behind 22-21 win against Eisenhower after the Bulldogs fell behind 21-0 before halftime in Ark City.
