A camper fire in the backyard of a Winfield residence Saturday evening has been ruled arson.
Winfield Fire Marshal Chad Mayberry told Cowley Post Monday morning the fire was called in at approximately 7 p.m. Saturday in the 400 block of W. 9th.
The fire started in a pop-up camper in the backyard of the residence.
Mayberry said the camper, along with a bumper-pull camper by it, had three individuals living in them and that the resident of the home was aware they were there.

The campers were unoccupied during the blaze and no injuries were reported.
“It was initially toned out as a structure fire, so mutual aid was called with Ark City and Burden Fire,” Mayberry said. “Crews were able to get the fire under control quickly.”
Mayberry said the fire destroyed the pop-up camper and caused thermal damage to the other camper, a privacy fence and to the vinyl siding of the home and another house to the east.
An investigation into how the fire started and who ignited it is underway, Mayberry said.
