Investigators believe a medical issue was the cause of an accident on Main in Winfield Saturday afternoon, Winfield Police Chief Robbie DeLong said Tuesday.

The driver, 66-year-old Gretchen Reed, a local woman, died a short time after the accident, which happened at Jumpstart convenience store. DeLong said police are waiting for information from a coroner’s examination to determine whether Reed died as a result of the medical condition or the accident.

“We are confident that the driver did suffer from some type of medical issue which caused them to push on the gas while the vehicle was in reverse,” DeLong said in an email response to questions from Cowley Post. “The vehicle collided with some type of a sign at (the convenience store) causing extensive damage to the truck.”

Reed was taken to a Winfield hospital and later died. A passenger was also taken to the hospital for treatment and expected to fully recover.
