TOPEKA — Gov. Laura Kelly and the Kansas City Chiefs announced today that an agreement has been reached to build a domed NFL stadium and mixed-use entertainment district in Kansas, a project state officials say will deliver billions in economic impact.
The deal includes a $3 billion stadium and entertainment district in Wyandotte County, scheduled to open for the 2031 NFL season, along with a new Chiefs headquarters and training facility in Olathe.
State officials estimate the construction phase alone will create more than 20,000 jobs and generate $4.4 billion in economic impact, with the stadium expected to bring more than $1 billion annually once completed.
The agreement was approved today by the Legislative Coordinating Council and will be structured as a public-private partnership. State leaders said the project will not require funding from the current state budget or new taxes on Kansans.
While the stadium will be built in northeast Kansas, officials said the economic ripple effects are expected to extend statewide, including construction jobs, tourism spending and increased state revenue that could benefit communities across Kansas, including Cowley County.
More details on financing and development are expected to be released in the coming days.
