The City of Arkansas City is inviting residents to help preserve a piece of local history through a new community time capsule set to be buried Friday, June 5, on the City Hall lawn.
Community members are encouraged to submit photographs, letters, memorabilia, newspapers, school items and other small keepsakes that reflect life in Arkansas City in 2026.
The capsule burial ceremony is scheduled for noon and comes just ahead of the June 6 opening celebration for Etzanoa, while also tying into the nationwide lead-up to America’s 250th birthday celebration.
A previous Arkansas City time capsule buried in 1976 was unearthed in July 2021 during the community’s 150th anniversary celebration.
“We thought the timing of rededicating the time capsule lined up perfectly with the opening of Etzanoa and the nationwide celebration leading up to America’s 250th birthday,” Communications Director Shana Adkisson said in a written release. “This is a unique opportunity to preserve what life looks like in Arkansas City right now while also recognizing the deep history that connects our community to the past.”
City officials said the newly dedicated capsule is expected to remain sealed for 50 years before being reopened by a future generation of Arkansas City residents.
Items for consideration may be dropped off at City Hall, 118 W. Central Ave., or coordinated through Adkisson. Officials said submissions will be reviewed before placement in the capsule to help ensure they are suitable for long-term preservation and available space.
The public is invited to attend the burial ceremony June 5 on the City Hall lawn.
