Cowley County Emergency Management and the City of Winfield are hosting a community recovery day Saturday as an opportunity for volunteers to come out and help with community clean-up from the Aug. 5 storms that blasted Winfield with straight-line winds estimated at 80 mph.

The storm uprooted trees, ravaged power lines, knocked over the Ferris wheel at the Cowley County Fair and severely damaged campers at the fairgrounds.

The storm also knocked out power for over 4,000 City of Winfield utility customers. By Wednesday, that number decreased to less than 100.

Those interested in helping Saturday will meet at 7:30 a.m. at the South Annex parking lot of the Cowley County Emergency Management office at 321 E. 10th.
