Driver going the wrong way on Kansas Turnpike causes fatal crash Sunday evening

A wrong-way driver on the Kansas Turnpike Sunday caused a multi-vehicle accident that left an Oklahoma woman dead, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

That accident occurred in Sumer County, northeast of Wellington around 6 p.m. The accident left both lanes of traffic closed for around three hours.

45-year-old Kap Cung, of Iowa, was northbound in the southbound lanes of I-35 in a 2024 Toyota Crown sedan. He struck a 2013 Ford Explorer driven by Colby Choate, 36, of Marshal, Okla. Continue reading story below ads.

Cung’s vehicle rolled. Choate’s vehicle was then struck by a 2022 Honda Civic and a 2025 Western Star semi. Choate was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cung was said to have sustained serious injuries. The drivers of the other two cars were not injured, according to KHP.
