Drivers not stopping for 77 bus stop leads to announcement from sheriff

Safety concerns at a school bus stop at U.S. 77 and 244th Rd. north of Ark City, have prompted Cowley County Sheriff David Falletti to issue a reminder about stopping for school buses.

There is considerable north bound traffic in the area of the stop and Falletti said many drivers are not stopping. It has become a hazard for the bus driver in the area and many times children are loading onto the bus as vehicles pass by at highway speeds, he said, nearly missing the bus.

The issue has persisted since school began in August, and has led the sheriff to issue a public service announcement.

The sheriff’s dept. will be in the area to control traffic and ensure the safety of students and citizens at the bus stop.
Falletti said motorists should remember that when a stop arm on a school bus is extended, you must stop. Failure to do so could result in a $315 fine and $108 in court costs. (Continue story below ad.)

The following information was part of Falletti’s public service announcement:

School bus stop arm safety is crucial to ensure the safety of children getting on and off the bus. When a school bus stops to pick up or drop off students, a stop arm extends from the side of the bus and flashing red lights are activated. This signals that children are entering or exiting the bus and may be crossing the street.

What you should do:

Stop Immediately: When you see the stop arm extended and the red lights flashing, you must stop your vehicle. No matter which direction you are coming from (unless you’re on the opposite side of a divided highway)

Stay Stopped: Remain stopped until the stop arm is fully retracted, and the red lights are turned off. Never proceed until all children are safely on the bus or have completely crossed the street.

Be extra cautious: Always look out for children, as they might be unpredictable. They could dart into the road from unexpected directions.

Children are most at risk when they’re getting on or off the bus. Stopping and waiting helps prevent accidents and ensures they have a safe path to cross the street. Violating the stop arm law can result in a $315.00 fine, $108.00 in court costs, points on your license, and most importantly, can endanger children’s lives.
Stop for the stop arm- It’s the law and it saves lives!
