Political newcomer Jim Maxwell has won the Republican primary in the race for Cowley County Commission Dist. 2, according to preliminary results released Tuesday night.

Because there are no Democratic challengers, Maxwell is very likely to be the new commissioner for Dist. 2. Only a successful write-in campaign, which is very rare, could put another candidate in the seat.

Maxwell had 234 votes to 151 for incumbent Bob Voegele and 107 for Gary Wilson. The results remain unofficial until a vote canvassing is completed.

Voegele has served two four-year terms as Dist. 2 commissioner and Wilson had served the three terms prior to that. Wilson is currently a member of the Cowley College Board of trustees. That is also an elected position.

Maxwell is a former firefighter and worked for Cowley County Road and Bridge. He will take office in 2025. Continue story below ads.

There were no other contested races at the county level. Thus, those in all other positions will be reelected.

In Sumner County, Republican Sheriff Darren Chambers won the right to another four-year term, barring a write-in campaign in the general election.

Chambers defeated challenger Jason Boyd 1,478 to 799 votes. There were 2,295 votes cast.

The sheriff secured 64.9 percent of the vote to Boyd’s 35.09 percent.
