Lightning is thought to be the cause of an oil tank battery fire that occurred this morning just off U.S. 160 highway east of Winfield.

Around 9:15 a.m., fire crews were called to the area of 172nd and 161st Rds. The fire produced heavy smoke and bursts of flame. El Dorado Refinery arrived at the scene with a foam truck and was able to fully extinguish the fire.

The fire was deemed to be fully under control just before 12:30 p.m. The scene was then turned over to the energy company, who will be responsible for all necessary cleanup at the site. Winfield Fire Marshal Pete Rowley confirmed that lightning was a possible cause of the blaze.

The Cowley County Sheriff’s Office, Winfield Fire and EMS and fire crews from Ark City, Atlanta and Burden responded to the scene. No injuries were immediately reported.
