A truck driver was transported to a Wichita-area hospital with serious injuries after two semis and a passenger car were involved in a fiery collision Wednesday morning in Winfield.
The driver of the car walked away with no reported injuries.
U.S. 160 east of Winfield at K360 was still closed as of 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Winfield Police Chief Robbie DeLong told KSOK the scene may take time to clean up due to the mix of oil, fuel and a fertilizer-type material one of the semis may have been hauling.
According to a news release from the Winfield Police Department Wednesday, members of the WPD and Winfield Fire/EMS were dispatched to the intersection of U.S. 160 and U.S. K360 Wednesday morning at 7:02 a.m. for a report of two tractor trailers involved in a traffic collision.
During the initial response, units were advised that the scene was involved in fire. Members from the Arkansas City Fire Department and the Burden Fire Department responded as well through mutual aid.
During the initial investigation, first responders learned a passenger car was also involved in the collision. The driver of that vehicle was evaluated at the scene and did not require further medical treatment.
One of the drivers from the tractor trailers was transported to a Wichita-area hospital with serious injuries, the other driver was transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Due to the extent of the accident, the Kansas Highway Patrol was asked to handle the investigation.
“This is an active investigation,” the WPD said. “And it is anticipated that crews will have U.S. 160 closed for an unknown period of time for the investigation to be conducted as well as the cleanup of the scene. This is all the information that will be released at this time. More information will be available through the Kansas Highway Patrol at a later time.”
The WPD was assisted by the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office, the Kansas Department of Transportation, the Ark City Fire Department, the Burden Fire Department and Cowley County Emergency Management.
