A structure fire on West 6th in Winfield Saturday night caused significant damage to the front of a home and sent one first responder to the hospital.

Around 8:15 p.m., Winfield Fire/EMS crews were called to 2408 W. 6th after reports of smoke and flames. When they arrived, firefighters found the front porch on fire with heavy smoke rolling from that area and lighter smoke coming from windows.

Crews immediately began attacking the flames while also searching the home. One person inside had already made it out and refused medical treatment. An emergency first responder was taken to William Newton Memorial Hospital. No further details on their condition were released.

Mutual aid was called in from Arkansas City, Burden and Udall fire departments. The fire was brought under control in about 25 minutes — at 8:39 p.m. — but crews stayed on scene for some time to make sure everything was fully out.

Investigators said the blaze caused severe fire and smoke damage to the front of the house, with smoke damage noted throughout the structure. At this point, the fire does not appear to have been intentionally set.

Winfield Fire/EMS is reminding residents to check their smoke alarms and make sure they have a home evacuation plan.
