A detached garage in rural Cowley County was heavily damaged Wednesday morning after an electrical malfunction sparked a fire, according to the Arkansas City Fire/EMS Department.
Crews were dispatched at 8:30 a.m. to the 5000 block of 286th Road for a report of a structure fire. Fire Marshal Gary Bowker said the blaze started in an outlet on the southeast corner of the garage.
Bowker estimated the damage at about $65,000. The garage, its contents, and two vehicles inside were all affected. Most of the loss came from smoke and heat damage, though firefighters noted some direct fire damage where the malfunction occurred.
No injuries were reported.
Firefighters were able to contain the fire within about five minutes of arriving on scene, preventing it from spreading to nearby structures. They remained for roughly 90 minutes to check for extension and secure the area. No mutual aid was requested.
