A Geuda Springs man died Sunday afternoon after his vehicle crashed and came to rest teetering over a bridge in rural Cowley County, authorities said.
Around 2:15 p.m. that day, Cowley County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the area of U.S. 160 and 151st Road, northeast of Winfield near Burden, after a report of a reckless driver. The caller said the vehicle was failing to maintain its lane and was last seen traveling northbound on 151st Road.
Deputies searching the area were headed south on 151st Road when they saw the vehicle leave the roadway and hit a bridge railing in the 12000 block. The vehicle sustained heavy damage and came to rest teetering over the edge of the bridge.
Deputies immediately requested EMS and additional emergency personnel. A passing semi-truck driver stopped to help and used chains to secure the vehicle, applying pressure to keep it from falling.
When emergency crews arrived, they worked to stabilize the vehicle and began rescue efforts. First responders treated and extricated the driver, who was trapped while the vehicle remained suspended.
The driver was identified as Kyson Paschal Scott, 38, of Geuda Springs. Despite extensive life-saving efforts, Scott was pronounced dead at the scene.
Jones Towing removed the vehicle, and Miles Funeral Service was contacted to take custody of Scott. Death notifications were handled by the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office and the Arkansas City Police Department. Emergency responders from Winfield and Burden, including rural Cowley County Rural Fire Dist. 3, responded to the scene.
The crash remains under investigation by the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office.
