A person is in custody and an Ark City home was destroyed by fire Wednesday morning at the same address where firefighters had extinguished a previous blaze earlier this month.

Firefighting this time was limited as the structure was allowed to continue burning with approval from the property owner, according to city officials. Trees and grass in the area were wetted down to keep them from burning.

Ark City Fire-EMS crews were called to the 1500 block of N. 3rd just before 10 a.m. for the report of a structure fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the structure ablaze. Investigators noted that the residence had no active utilities. A person of interest was taken into custody in connection with the latest incident.

On March 3, a generator was thought to have caused a fire that did extensive smoke and fire damage to the home. Residents in the area said it seemed the property had been without city electric service and residents would instead use generators for power.

An official cause of today’s fire remains under investigation.
