Kildare, Okla. gets national attention after wind turbine crashes to the ground Tuesday

Kildare Fire chief Travis Harris has received quite a few calls and emails since a wind turbine came crashing to the ground Tuesday.

“Heard from people across the nation, and the UK,” Harris said and laughed Thursday. “Everyone wants to know about it.”

There’s not a whole lot to know so far about the turbine that crumpled to the ground at Kildare and Prentice Rds. An energy company that runs the windfarm in that area told Harris they’d not seen anything like it.

That the turbine came down on a day that wasn’t particularly windy has added to the mystery. Fortunately, there was no one around when the towering structure fell, however, there were reports from up to four miles away from those who said they heard it come down.

The cell on the top section of the tower appeared to hit the ground first, Harris said. Supporting sections then came down on top of that cell.

The fire dept. didn’t stay at the scene long.

“We turned it over to the energy company pretty quick,” Harris said. “They’ll get into it and do an investigation I’m sure.”

Kildare is located between Newkirk and Ponca City in Kay County, Okla.
