Lightning from morning storm may have caused house fire east of Winfield Monday

Lightning is the suspected cause of a house fire early this morning at a residence east of Winfield just off U.S. 160 highway.

Around 4:40 a.m. Monday, Burden Fire Dept. was dispatched to 19479 US 160 for the report of a structure fire. Winfield Fire/EMS responded to the scene as automatic aid.

Crews arrived to find smoke coming from the residence and made entry into the home. Fire in the basement was extinguished and a search of the rest of the property was conducted, according to information provided by Winfield fire marshal Pete Rowley. (Continue story below ads.)

All occupants were safely out of the residence and no injuries were reported.

The fire was determined to be accidental in nature with lightning as a possible cause, Rowley said.

Dexter fire and the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office also responded.
