A 24-year veteran of the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office left his position last week, following his arrest for DUI earlier this month.
John Vanroyen, who had attained the rank of corporal deputy, officially departed the sheriff’s office Nov. 13. A county official said Vanroyen had been with the county sheriff’s office since Aug. 2000.
On Nov. 8, Vanroyen, 48, of Burden, was involved in a non-injury accident in the 2200 block of E. Ninth, according to a report from Winfield Police Dept. He struck a guardrail and sign.
Vanroyen was placed under arrest for DUI. Online jail records show he was booked into jail at 1:45 a.m. the day of the incident. He bonded out about 45 minutes later.
Vanroyen’s salary at the time of his departure was $66,998, according to information from the county.
The Courier Traveler reports Vanroyen resigned and that no internal investigation will be conducted.
Just two years ago, Vanroyen was shot and injured in a fatal officer-involved shooting incident that occurred north of Winfield. He and two other deputies were honored by the county for their efforts in that shooting, which was determined to be justified.
