Matt Shelton will return next year as head coach of the Winfield High School boys basketball team.

Shelton had served in the position in an interim role near the conclusion of the season that ended last month. He announced his permanent selection via Facebook this week.

“Being named the head coach of the Winfield varsity boys basketball team is an incredible honor and a responsibility I don’t take lightly,” he told Cowley Post. This isn’t just about basketball — it’s about building character, creating a culture of accountability, and giving these young men the tools to succeed in life. I’m passionate about helping them grow as athletes and as people, and I’m excited to build a program that reflects the pride and spirit of the Winfield community.”

He had served as an assistant for the Vikings since 2021. Shelton was 6-3 as interim coach this past season after taking over for Mychael Tripp.

Shelton has experience as a high school head basketball coach dating back to 2000 to 2006 when he lived in Iowa. He was an assistant coach and college administrator at Graceland University from 2008 to 2015.

He moved to Winfield in 2016 to work as athletic director at Southwestern College. From 2018 to 2019 he coached girls basketball in Iowa.
