MCPHERSON – The Winfield Viking boys basketball team dropped its fifth straight game Tuesday night, falling 71-55 at McPherson.
The Bullpups raced to a 7-1 lead in the opening minutes, but Winfield responded with a 15-6 run and led 16-13 after the first quarter. An early three-pointer in the second quarter gave the Vikings their largest lead of the night at six points. McPherson answered with a 33-28 halftime advantage and outscored Winfield 24-10 in the pivotal third quarter. The Bullpups led by as many as 26 points in the fourth quarter and secured their third straight win.
Senior Evan Hutto led Winfield with 27 points, and Le’Gend Riley added 13. Jett Pyle led McPherson with 25 points, while freshman Eli Reasoner added 19 points and 10 rebounds. Winfield falls to 4-7 on the season.
The Winfield girls struggled offensively in a 44-18 loss at McPherson, making just three field goals. The Bullpups opened with a 10-0 run before Winfield sophomore Karsyn Hutto sank four free throws. McPherson extended its lead with a 16-4 second quarter and held a 26-8 advantage at halftime. The Pups led 44-11 after three quarters.
Winfield girls shot 3 of 21 from the field, 2 of 9 from three-point range and 10 of 26 from the free throw line. Hutto led the Winfield girls with eight points. The Winfield girls fall to 1-10.
The Class 4A No. 1 Wellington girls (10-0) visit Winfield for a 6 p.m. tipoff Friday, followed by the Wellington boys at 7:45 p.m.
