The mother of a 16-year-old Newkirk High School student who was hit by a semi Monday during the lunch hour at a crosswalk to the school says her daughter is recovering — although the injuries are substantial.

“She is alert and doing okay,” LeiLani Williams posted on her Facebook page at around 5 p.m. Monday from Wesley Trauma Center in Wichita. “She has multiple facial fractures, broken clavicle, broken rib, broken foot, possible hand fracture all on the right side. She is going to have a hard recovery. She will need surgeries.”

According to Kay NewsCow Monday, Williams’ daughter was airlifted to Wichita via helicopter and was alert and breathing well when first responders arrived.

“Thanks for all of the thoughts and prayers,” Williams said. “We appreciate it.”

Newkirk Fire Chief Adam Longcrier told Kay NewsCow first responders were called at 12:14 p.m. about the accident. When crews arrived the girl was underneath the semi.

Longcrier said she wasn’t trapped, alert and breathing well, but under the truck near the driver’s door with numerous injuries.

Crews quickly called for AirEvac from Ponca City and then to Wichita.

She was transported in critical condition.
