The Winfield Arts & Humanities Council has announced a new mural is in the works for Winfield’s upcoming 150th birthday celebration.

With help from grant funding, the mural will be located on the north exterior wall of Home Lumber.

“You may or may not be aware, but in 1999, Winfield was named the ‘Mural Capital of Kansas,’ the council said in a Facebook post. “It’s a fact. And, in the not too distant future, (the Home Lumber) wall will become the ‘canvas’ for a mural, ‘The Building Blocks of Winfield,’ in honor of Winfield’s Sesquicentennial.

“This will be a mural that will reflect the values, occupations, recreational activities and significant events that are part of Winfield’s heritage and have shaped its culture.”

Muralists Andrea and Alex Polzin of Emporia will be working with the council.

“Members of the community will be invited to help paint the mural beginning in May, with a dedication expected the first week of June during the Winfield 150th Celebration,” the council said.

Work is expected to begin in March.
