Newell Brands Inc. – owner of Rubbermaid – has bought the former Silgan building on E. 12th in Winfield, according to Cowley County property records.

The purchase adds about 160,000 square feet of industrial and, or, warehouse space to Newell Rubbermaid’s already-significant local footprint. In Nov. 2023, Silgan – a producer of plastic dispensing products – announced it was consolidating operations and closing its Winfield plant, which employed 169 people.

The plastics plant had operated under various ownership for many years.

County records available online show the property has an appraised value of $4.5 million. Activity at the property has been visible recently, multiple sources told Cowley Post.

Atlanta-based Newell Brands has not yet responded to requests for comment made by Cowley Post late in the day Monday. We’ll let you know if and when we hear back.

Winfield City Manager Taggart Wall, when reached for comment Monday, said he was aware of the sale which he said had closed sometime near the end of 2024. He did not offer comment as to what Newell’s plans were for the property.

“Obviously, we’re pleased with their continued investment in our community,” he said.

Newell Rubbermaid currently occupies a 660,000 square feet megawarehouse owned by the city of Winfield. Constructed in 2008, it’s located at 1101 Meldrum St., just a short distance from the former Silgan plant.
