Two Winfield Police officers sustained minor injuries, and a 34-year-old man was arrested, in an altercation that occurred Friday night at the Walnut Valley Festival.

Nathen D. Stephenson, of Locust Grove, Okla., was booked into the Cowley County Jail on charges of battery on a law enforcement officer, assault on an officer, interference with police and disorderly conduct. He posted bond and was released Saturday.

At 8:35 p.m., police were called to the W. Ninth side of the Winfield Fairgrounds near the entrance to the festival. Police Chief Robbie DeLong said officers working the event responded to a report that an adult male was intoxicated and trying to leave in a vehicle with a young child. (Continue story below ad.)

Stephenson was said to have been trying to take the child from another adult when law enforcement arrived. During this incident, Stephenson pushed a Winfield officer, DeLong said.

The suspect then resisted when police attempted to take him into custody. Stephenson was eventually arrested and taken to jail.
