An extensive renovation of Pike Road in Winfield – which serves the commercial area that includes Dillons and Walmart – should be completed by Dec. 1, city officials said Thursday.

The $1.6 million project is meant to improve infrastructure, safety and accessibility. The project was funded in part with a $1 million KDOT Cost Share Grant.

Andale Construction is the general contractor for the work. Installation of new utilities is included in the project. The city says that means updating older systems to provide enhanced service to residents and businesses in the area.

Improving drainage and runoff management was also a focus.

Turn lanes will added at 19th and Pike Rd. to help congestion and improve traffic flow.

Drivers will notice changes at the south end of the project where the road intersects with US 77, officials said. The city has worked with retailers to add striping and new traffic flow devices to improve the intersection.

Better pedestrian access is also include in the work.
