The Ark City Police Department made an arrest this week involving a substantial counterfeit currency investigation.
According to a news release late Thursday from the ACPD, officers executed a search warrant at Cowley College’s Kirk Dale dorms. The police department said the search warrant culminated via month-long counterfeit currency investigation.
The ACPD says over the past month, officers have been getting reports of a male individual going to a local business and paying or attempting to pay with what was believed to be counterfeit currency.
Officers talked with employees and witnesses and developed a suspect, Lam Gok Kuany, 20, of Nebraska.
ACPD officers, in cooperation with Cowley College Campus Security, executed a search warrant at Kirke Dale dorms.
Inside the room, they found over $28,000 in different denominations in what is believed to be counterfeit currency. Officers also located suspected illegal substances and items associated with their use.
Kuany was taken into custody Thursday without incident. He faces five counts of counterfeiting currency, four counts of theft by deception, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
His bond is $17,500.
Kuany, who is listed on the roster for the Cowley College men’s basketball team as a 6’7” 220-pound sophomore forward from Omaha, has not been an active member of the Tigers since December, according to a statement released by Cowley College Thursday evening.
“Cowley College is aware of an arrest made on college property from a counterfeit investigation,” the statement read. “Officials will continue to cooperate with local law enforcement while following current institutional policy and procedure. Any questions regarding the investigation should be directed to the Ark City Police Department or the District Attorney’s Office.
“Lam Gok Kuany is listed on the roster but has not been an active member of the men’s basketball team since December. Please be assured that the safety and well-being of our students, faculty, and staff are our top priority.”
