A Ponca City man died early Sunday morning in a single-vehicle rollover accident that occurred near Winfield, according to the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office.
42-year-old Douglass D. Caldwell was transported to the hospital in Winfield and later pronounced deceased. He was reported to be unresponsive and not breathing at the scene.
The sheriff’s office and Winfield Fire and EMS responded to the accident.
Around 4:35 a.m., rescue crews were dispatched to U.S. 160 highway – in the area of 61st Rd. – where a person was reported to be lying in the north ditch near a pickup truck. Caldwell was said to have been travelling east on 160 and failed to navigate a curve.
His 2025 Toyota Tundra entered the north ditch and overturned. There were no other occupants of the vehicle, which was towed from the scene by B&L Towing.
The accident was on a familiar stretch of roadway near a Winfield livestock auction facility.
