The remains of a 77-year-old Winfield man have been found at the scene of a large fire that destroyed a hotel in Canada, according to a police report.

Eugene “Gene” Earl Spoon had been unaccounted for since the fire at Driftwood Inn in Deer Lake, Newfoundland and Labrador. He had been staying at the hotel as a guest while on a hunting trip.

A report from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police West District General Investigation Section included the following.

“On October 19, police received a report of a missing elderly man who was a guest of the Driftwood (Inn)… This morning, October 23, 2024, during a search of the fire scene, human remains were located and have been identified as those of the missing man.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is engaged. The fire scene is being held and processed by the RCMP as part of an ongoing investigation.

RCMP NL extends condolences to the family and friends of the missing man.”

Just last Christmas, Spoon’s wife, 69-year-old Janet Spoon, was found deceased on Christmas Day. She had gone missing and an extensive search led to her body being found in a pond at a business just outside Winfield.

The Cowley County Sheriff’s Office investigated the Christmastime death.
