Two people were treated for injuries early this morning after escaping a house fire in Winfield. A cause of the blaze remains under investigation, though foul play has been ruled out.
Around 5:15 a.m., Winfield Fire-EMS was called to the 1500 block of Fuller for the report of a fire. Dispatchers reported that one person was stranded on the roof of the two-story home.
Firefighters arrived to find flames visible on the first floor. The person on the roof had gotten down and four other occupants of the home had fled to safety, according to a report from Fire Marshal Peter Rowley.
An extensive search was then conducted to ensure no one else was inside the home.
Rowley said an aggressive attack was made on the wood-framed home to extinguish the fire. The residence sustained extensive smoke and fire damage. An investigation into cause and origin is ongoing.
Two people were transported William Newton Hospital in Winfield for treatment of injuries that were not life threatening. No fire personnel were injured.
Ark City and Udall fire also responded, as did Winfield police. Rowley offered thanks to all that assisted, including Cowley County Emergency Communications.
