Work and school days ended early across Cowley County Monday in preparation for a severe weather outbreak expected to spawn tornadoes and large hail.

The reality was some heavy rains and high winds that showed up later than expected.

It was result that Cowley County Emergency Management officials said on Facebook offered “a prime example of how unpredictable weather can be.” The Cowley County Emergency Operations Center and storm spotters were activated through the day and into the evening tracking the storms via radio and spotter reports.

An instance of cloud rotation was reported near Strother Field at one point, but seemed to fade quickly. Damage reports included a partial collapse of a building in Burden.

There were multiple reports of tree limbs down, too.

Heavy rain caused some localized flooding in Winfield. Ominous cloud formations brought precipitation and some powerful gusts, but little or no hail.

In Sumner County, storm activity was even less in a location originally thought to be in a very high risk area.

In Barnsdall, Okla., a tornado touched down and destroyed homes. Rescue efforts were also under way there.
