Soroptimist International of Arkansas City recently held their annual sock and underwear distribution for children Pre-K through Fifth Grade. Approximately 300 children benefitted by receiving a package of socks and a package of underwear to start the school year.
This is the 12th year Soroptimist International of Arkansas City has sponsored the project. For several years the project has been funded in part by the women’s giving circle, Power of the Purse, through Legacy Regional Community Foundation.
Soroptimist is a global volunteer organization that provides women and girls with access to the education and training they need to achieve economic empowerment. Soroptimist was formed in 1921 in Oakland, California, at a time when women were not permitted to join service organizations. The organization name, loosely translated from the Latin, means best for women.
Today, there are over 25,000 members and supporters in countries across North America, Latin America and the Pacific Rim. Comprised of five federations that make up Soroptimist International, clubs in more than 120 countries throughout the world are working together toward the shared vision where “Women and girls have the resources and opportunities to reach their full potential and live their dreams.”
Locally, Soroptimist International of Arkansas City strives to carry out the organization mission through three service committees – Educational Dreams, Dream Programs, and Dream Locally.
These committees implement programming such as Soroptimist Girls and High School Scholarships, Live Your Dream Scholarships, Ark City Girls for elementary girls and Dream It, Be It mentoring for high school girls, as well as services projects like the Sock Project Plus and other local community giving.
