Three juveniles were able to safely escape a vehicle that ended up in Wellington’s Slate creek late Sunday.

A 16-year-old driver, who has not been identified by name, was driving a 2007 Hyundai in the Woods Park area when the accident occurred. Around 9:30 p.m., the driver was southbound on Lynne Burris Dr. when the vehicle left the roadway, struck the east bank of the creek and entered the water. (Continue story below ads.)

Two 16-year-old passengers were also in the Hyundai. All three managed to escape the vehicle without injury. An investigation is ongoing. The vehicle was later removed from the water.

In May 2023, 42-year-old Ralph Lee Pingry was killed as he drove westbound on Lynn Burris Dr. not far from where Sunday’s accident occurred. The more recent accident appeared to have occurred in a more shallow stretch of the creek.
