DANVILLE, Kan. — Rail traffic has resumed after a train derailment near Danville, about 40 miles west of Wellington, temporarily shut down both main tracks on a BNSF Railway corridor late Sunday.

According to BNSF, the derailment was reported shortly before midnight Sunday and affected both main tracks through the area.

Crews worked throughout Monday to restore service. One track reopened shortly before 5 p.m. Monday, while the second track returned to service shortly before 10 p.m.

Recovery efforts continued throughout Monday as crews worked to clear derailed freight cars from the rail line. Photos from the scene showed excavators assisting with cleanup operations, including uprighting and removing rail cars that had come to rest alongside the tracks.

BNSF has not released information regarding the cause of the derailment or the number of rail cars involved.

The Danville derailment was one of two derailments reported by BNSF on Sunday night. The railroad also reported a derailment near Woodward, Oklahoma, shortly before midnight. One track in that area reopened Monday evening, while repairs on the second track were expected to continue through Tuesday.
